Learning to Drive in Hammersmith

Hammersmith is dominated by two pieces of road infrastructure: the gyratory around the Broadway and the A4 flyover running west towards Chiswick and the M4. Between them they make this one of the more intimidating places in West London to learn, and also one of the most thorough. A learner who is comfortable on the Hammersmith gyratory has already handled something harder than most test routes contain.

Away from those two, the area is more forgiving than its reputation. King Street is a normal busy high street, Brook Green and the Ravenscourt Park streets are quiet and residential, and there is plenty of space to build the basics before going anywhere near the Broadway. We structure lessons so the gyratory comes late, deliberately.

The Roads You Will Actually Drive

Not a generic syllabus. These are the specific roads and junctions your lessons in Hammersmith are built around, in the order most learners meet them.

  1. Hammersmith gyratory and the Broadway

Multi-lane, fast, and with exits arriving in quick succession around a bus station and a shopping centre. Lane choice must be settled well before entry. The hardest single piece of road in our coverage area, and a genuine confidence milestone.

  2. King Street

The main shopping street, with bus lanes, loading vehicles and pedestrians crossing between parked cars. Steady, demanding urban driving without the intensity of the gyratory.

  3. The A4 and the flyover

Fast dual carriageway heading west, with slip roads and lane changes at speed. Extremely useful practice, since very few of our areas offer a road like this on the doorstep.

  4. Shepherds Bush Road and Brook Green

The route north, mixing busy sections with quieter stretches around the green. Good for junction work and for building sustained concentration at moderate speed.

  5. The Ravenscourt Park streets

Quiet residential roads west of King Street, used for first lessons and manoeuvre practice. Wide enough to be forgiving, with real parking bays to reverse into.

  6. Tolworth Driving Test Centre

10 miles from Hammersmith — about 35 minutes via the a316 and a3.

Driving Test Centres Near Hammersmith

You are not limited to the closest centre. Booking one a little further out often means a much earlier test date, and we teach the routes at every centre listed here.

Tolworth Driving Test Centre

1b Douglas Road, Tolworth, Surrey KT6 7RZ

10 milesAbout 35 minutes via the A316 and A3

The usual centre for Hammersmith learners. The journey along the A316 is excellent practice in itself, and Tolworth routes include dual carriageway driving.

Morden Driving Test Centre

10 Tudor Drive, Morden, Surrey SM4 4PE

10 milesAbout 40 minutes

Faster suburban roads and several large roundabouts. Comparable distance to Tolworth, so worth checking both for the earliest date.

Mitcham Driving Test Centre

Redhouse Road, Mitcham, Surrey CR0 3AF

11 milesAbout 40 minutes

The furthest of the three. Roundabout-heavy routes, generally only used when the others have nothing for some weeks.

Distances are from central Hammersmith. Test availability changes week to week — ask us which centre is booking soonest when you enquire.

What Happens in Your First Lesson in Hammersmith

Nervous about the first one? Here is exactly how it goes, start to finish.

  1. 1.We collect you

Your instructor picks you up from your door anywhere in W6 or W14, or from a meeting point that suits you — Hammersmith Underground station is a common one. The lesson clock starts when you get in the car, not when we set off.

  2. 2.Eyesight check and paperwork

A quick number-plate read at 20 metres, the same check the examiner does on test day, and we take a look at your provisional licence. Two minutes, once, on your first lesson only.

  3. 3.The cockpit drill

We drive to The Ravenscourt Park streets and go through the controls with the engine off — seat, mirrors, pedals, gears and steering. You will not be asked to move the car until you know what everything does.

  4. 4.Your first drive

Moving off, stopping, and steering on a quiet road with dual controls on your side of the car. Most people drive within the first half hour of their first lesson, and nobody is thrown into traffic on day one.

  5. 5.Debrief and plan

We drop you back, go over what went well and what to work on, and agree what the next lesson covers. You will get a clear idea of roughly how many hours you need before a Tolworth Driving Test Centre test.

About Hammersmith

Hammersmith sits on the north bank of the Thames in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, and functions as a major transport interchange for West London. Four Underground lines meet here, the bus station is one of the busiest in the city, and the A4 carries traffic straight out to Heathrow and the M4.

That connectivity cuts both ways. Getting into central London is easy, but the area is also carved up by fast roads, and local journeys can be surprisingly awkward. Charing Cross Hospital is a significant employer, and shift patterns there are a common reason people in W6 decide to learn.
