A one-way gyratory wraps the shopping area, the bridge carries heavy traffic across the Thames into Hampton Wick, and the A3 runs past the eastern edge at national speed limit. Away from the centre, the area opens up quickly. Kingston Hill climbs towards Richmond Park with long sightlines and proper gradients, Canbury and Norbiton give quiet residential streets, and the roads towards Surbiton are ordinary suburban driving. What Happens in Your First Lesson in Kingston

1.We meet you
Your instructor meets you at an agreed meeting point in KT1 or KT2 — Kingston railway station is a common one. The lesson clock starts when you get in the car.
2.Eyesight check and paperwork
A quick number-plate read at 20 metres, the same check the examiner does on test day, and we take a look at your provisional licence. Two minutes, once, on your first lesson only.
3.The cockpit drill
We drive to The Canbury and Norbiton streets and go through the controls with the engine off — seat, mirrors, pedals, gears and steering. You will not be asked to move the car until you know what everything does.
4.Your first drive
