Nine Elms is the newest place we teach, and it drives like it. The road layout around Battersea Power Station and the US Embassy was largely built in the last decade, which means wide carriageways, generous sightlines, clearly marked lanes and modern roundabouts. For a learner that is close to ideal: the roads are busy enough to be real practice but laid out logically rather than accreted over centuries.
The catch is that it is bounded by two of the harder pieces of road in South London. Vauxhall Cross sits at the eastern end and Queenstown Road and the Chelsea Bridge approach at the western, so a learner here progresses from unusually forgiving roads to unusually demanding ones within about a mile. We use that deliberately, building the basics on the new grid before stepping out to either end.

Not a generic syllabus. These are the specific roads and junctions your lessons in Nine Elms are built around, in the order most learners meet them.
Wide, modern and well marked, with clear lane discipline and good visibility at junctions. The best roads in our coverage area for building confidence quickly, because nothing is ambiguous.
The main east-west route, busier and older in character, with bus stops, side turnings and parked sections. A realistic step up from the new grid without being intimidating.
Multi-lane traffic funnelling towards the river crossing, with a large junction at the bridge end. Lane decisions must be made early, which is exactly the habit tests reward.
The route south west towards Clapham, with steady traffic and a long sequence of junctions. Good for sustained concentration at moderate speed.
The eastern boundary of the area and one of the most complex junction systems in South London. A genuine milestone, taken on only when car control is automatic.
Mitcham Driving Test Centre
7 miles from Nine Elms — about 25 minutes.
You are not limited to the closest centre. Booking one a little further out often means a much earlier test date, and we teach the routes at every centre listed here.
| Test Centre | Distance | Drive Time | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mitcham Driving Test CentreRedhouse Road, Mitcham, Surrey CR0 3AF | 7 miles | About 25 minutes | The usual centre from Nine Elms. Routes are roundabout-heavy and considerably more open than inner London roads, so we build in practice further south beforehand. |
| Morden Driving Test Centre10 Tudor Drive, Morden, Surrey SM4 4PE | 7 miles | About 25 minutes | Faster suburban roads and national-speed-limit driving. Similar distance to Mitcham, so worth checking both for the earliest date. |

Nervous about the first one? Here is exactly how it goes, start to finish.
Your instructor picks you up from your door anywhere in SW8 or SW11, or from a meeting point that suits you — Nine Elms Underground station is a common one. The lesson clock starts when you get in the car, not when we set off.
A quick number-plate read at 20 metres, the same check the examiner does on test day, and we take a look at your provisional licence. Two minutes, once, on your first lesson only.
We drive to The Vauxhall Cross approach and go through the controls with the engine off — seat, mirrors, pedals, gears and steering. You will not be asked to move the car until you know what everything does.
Moving off, stopping, and steering on a quiet road with dual controls on your side of the car. Most people drive within the first half hour of their first lesson, and nobody is thrown into traffic on day one.
We drop you back, go over what went well and what to work on, and agree what the next lesson covers. You will get a clear idea of roughly how many hours you need before a Mitcham Driving Test Centre test.
Free door-to-door pickup across the Nine Elms area and the surrounding SW8 streets, including the new residential developments. These are the meeting points learners here use most.
We've simplified the process of getting your driving license into four easy steps.

Common questions about driving lessons in Nine Elms
Nine Elms occupies the stretch of riverside between Vauxhall and Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth, and has been transformed more completely than anywhere else in the city over the last fifteen years. What was industrial land, market buildings and a derelict power station is now one of the largest regeneration areas in Europe, with the US Embassy and the restored Battersea Power Station as its landmarks.
The Northern line extension opened stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station, which changed local transport considerably. Even so, the area is still filling in, and many residents work shifts or travel across the river regularly, which makes driving more useful here than the transport map alone suggests.
