Pimlico is a small, tightly planned grid of white stucco terraces between Victoria and the river, and it drives quite unlike anywhere else we cover. The streets are regular and reasonably wide, but they are lined with resident parking on both sides, and the whole area is wrapped by fast one-way traffic on Vauxhall Bridge Road and the Embankment. It is precise driving rather than heavy driving.
The grid layout is a genuine advantage for beginners. Right angles, predictable junctions and light through-traffic on the interior streets mean you can practise junction routine dozens of times in an hour without the distraction of buses and cyclists. We use that early, then take the main roads once the routine is automatic.

London · Door-to-door pickup
Not a generic syllabus. These are the specific roads and junctions your lessons in Pimlico are built around, in the order most learners meet them.
Multi-lane and fast, carrying traffic between Victoria and the river crossing. Lane choice has to be settled early, and the junctions come quickly. The main road every Pimlico learner needs to be comfortable on.
The riverside run, faster and more open than the rest of the area. Useful for speed confidence and smooth lane discipline, and the approach to both Vauxhall and Chelsea bridges.
The two main streets running through the grid, busier than the side roads with buses, shops and pedestrian crossings. A step up from the interior streets without being overwhelming.
Quieter, with the estate layout giving a different rhythm of junctions and blind corners. Good for observation practice where sightlines are restricted.
Regular, right-angled residential streets with parking on both sides. Where beginners start, and about the best place in central London to drill junction routine and parallel parking.
Mitcham Driving Test Centre
9 miles from Pimlico — about 35 minutes.
You are not limited to the closest centre. Booking one a little further out often means a much earlier test date, and we teach the routes at every centre listed here.

Nervous about the first one? Here is exactly how it goes, start to finish.
Your instructor picks you up from your door anywhere in SW1V, or from a meeting point that suits you — Pimlico Underground station is a common one. The lesson clock starts when you get in the car, not when we set off.
A quick number-plate read at 20 metres, the same check the examiner does on test day, and we take a look at your provisional licence. Two minutes, once, on your first lesson only.
We drive to The Pimlico grid and go through the controls with the engine off — seat, mirrors, pedals, gears and steering. You will not be asked to move the car until you know what everything does.
Moving off, stopping, and steering on a quiet road with dual controls on your side of the car. Most people drive within the first half hour of their first lesson, and nobody is thrown into traffic on day one.
We drop you back, go over what went well and what to work on, and agree what the next lesson covers. You will get a clear idea of roughly how many hours you need before a Mitcham Driving Test Centre test.
Free door-to-door pickup across SW1V, from home, work or college. These are the meeting points Pimlico learners suggest most often.
We've simplified the process of getting your driving license into four easy steps.

Common questions about driving lessons in Pimlico
Pimlico occupies a compact area of the City of Westminster, bounded by Victoria to the north, the Thames to the south and Vauxhall Bridge Road to the east. It is best known for Thomas Cubitt’s grid of white stucco terraces, for Dolphin Square, and for Tate Britain on the riverside at Millbank.
It is extremely well connected, with Pimlico and Victoria stations both close and the river bus running from nearby piers. Parking is genuinely difficult and permits are competitive, which means most people here who learn to drive are doing it for work, for journeys out of London, or in anticipation of moving somewhere a car is necessary.
