Learning to Drive in Putney

Putney gives learners two things most South West London areas cannot: a bridge and a proper stretch of the A3. Putney Bridge means crossing the Thames into a junction system on the far side, and the A3 at Putney Vale means dual carriageway driving at the national speed limit within ten minutes of the high street. Both appear on Tolworth test routes, and both are skills that learners in flatter, more residential areas simply never build.

Putney High Street is the daily challenge. It is narrow for the traffic it carries, with bus lanes, a constant stream of pedestrians heading for the station and deliveries stopping wherever they like. We leave it until basic control is solid, then use it heavily, because it teaches patience better than any exercise.

The Roads You Will Actually Drive

Not a generic syllabus. These are the specific roads and junctions your lessons in Putney are built around, in the order most learners meet them.

  1. Putney High Street

Busy, narrow and full of buses. The width changes constantly as vehicles stop and pull out, so road positioning has to be actively managed rather than set once. The single most useful road in the area for building composure.

  2. Putney Bridge and the approach

A river crossing leading into a busy junction on the Fulham side. Lane discipline has to be decided before the bridge, not on it, and the exits arrive quickly. Good preparation for any multi-lane junction on a test route.

  3. The A3 at Putney Vale

Genuine dual carriageway at the national speed limit, with slip roads and lane changes at speed. Very few of our areas have this so close, and it is the reason Putney learners are usually comfortable at higher speeds.

  4. Upper Richmond Road (A205)

The South Circular running east to west, with heavy traffic and a sequence of signalled junctions. Steady, sustained driving that builds concentration over distance.

  5. Putney Heath and the streets off Putney Hill

Quieter residential roads climbing towards the Heath, used for first lessons, hill practice and manoeuvres in real parking bays.

  6. Tolworth Driving Test Centre

6 miles from Putney — about 20 minutes straight down the a3.

Driving Test Centres Near Putney

You are not limited to the closest centre. Booking one a little further out often means a much earlier test date, and we teach the routes at every centre listed here.

Tolworth Driving Test Centre

1b Douglas Road, Tolworth, Surrey KT6 7RZ

6 milesAbout 20 minutes straight down the A3

The natural centre from Putney, and an easy run on test day. Routes feature dual carriageway work, which suits learners who have spent time on the A3 already.

Morden Driving Test Centre

10 Tudor Drive, Morden, Surrey SM4 4PE

6 milesAbout 25 minutes

Faster suburban roads and several large roundabouts. A good alternative when Tolworth is booked out.

Mitcham Driving Test Centre

Redhouse Road, Mitcham, Surrey CR0 3AF

8 milesAbout 30 minutes

Further east and roundabout-heavy. Usually only worth it when the closer two have nothing for weeks.

Distances are from central Putney. Test availability changes week to week — ask us which centre is booking soonest when you enquire.

What Happens in Your First Lesson in Putney

Nervous about the first one? Here is exactly how it goes, start to finish.

  1. 1.We collect you

Your instructor picks you up from your door anywhere in SW15, or from a meeting point that suits you — Putney railway station is a common one. The lesson clock starts when you get in the car, not when we set off.

  2. 2.Eyesight check and paperwork

A quick number-plate read at 20 metres, the same check the examiner does on test day, and we take a look at your provisional licence. Two minutes, once, on your first lesson only.

  3. 3.The cockpit drill

We drive to Putney Heath and the streets off Putney Hill and go through the controls with the engine off — seat, mirrors, pedals, gears and steering. You will not be asked to move the car until you know what everything does.

  4. 4.Your first drive

Moving off, stopping, and steering on a quiet road with dual controls on your side of the car. Most people drive within the first half hour of their first lesson, and nobody is thrown into traffic on day one.

  5. 5.Debrief and plan

We drop you back, go over what went well and what to work on, and agree what the next lesson covers. You will get a clear idea of roughly how many hours you need before a Tolworth Driving Test Centre test.

About Putney

Putney sits on the south bank of the Thames in the London Borough of Wandsworth, facing Fulham across Putney Bridge. It is best known for the start of the Boat Race and for its riverside, and it stretches south west through Putney Heath towards Roehampton and Richmond Park.

The District line and a National Rail station serve the area, and the bus links along the South Circular are good, but Putney is also where South West London starts to spread out. Journeys towards Kingston, Richmond and the M25 are far quicker by car, which is why many residents here learn to drive relatively early compared with inner London.
