What Happens in Your First Lesson in Sheen

East Sheen, usually just called Sheen, sits in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames between Richmond and Barnes, bordered by Richmond Park to the south and the Thames to the north at Mortlake. It is a largely residential area of Edwardian and interwar housing, with a compact shopping parade along Upper Richmond Road West.
There is no Underground, and the railway line through Mortlake and North Sheen runs into Waterloo rather than connecting usefully across London. That makes local journeys towards Kingston, Twickenham or the A3 awkward without a car, and it is the main reason residents here learn to drive. Sheen Gate is one of the main vehicle entrances to Richmond Park, which also shapes local traffic.
