Learning to Drive in Tooting

Tooting is the closest of all our areas to a test centre, and that changes how lessons here work. Morden is three miles down the A24 and Mitcham is not much further, so learners spend a high proportion of their hours on the actual roads the examiner will use. Very few areas let you practise the real thing this cheaply.

The local driving challenge is Tooting Broadway. It is one of the busiest junctions in South London, with buses, market traffic, pedestrians crossing more or less continuously and side roads feeding in from every direction. Learners who can handle the Broadway at four in the afternoon are rarely troubled by anything on a test route.

Your Route

The Roads You Will Actually Drive

Not a generic syllabus. These are the specific roads and junctions your lessons in Tooting are built around, in the order most learners meet them.

  1. Tooting High Street and Tooting Broadway

Dense, slow and unpredictable. Buses stopping, shoppers stepping out between parked cars, and a junction that demands constant observation in every direction. The best observation training in the borough, and genuinely tiring at first.

  2. Mitcham Road

The run east towards Mitcham, and effectively the approach to one of the two local test centres. Steady traffic, regular side turnings, and a road most Tooting learners will drive on test day.

  3. The A24 towards Morden

Multi-lane and faster, with several sets of lights in quick succession. Lane discipline and forward planning are the skills here, and it is the main route to Morden test centre.

  4. Garratt Lane and the Graveney streets

Quieter residential roads heading north towards Earlsfield. Where beginners start, and where we return for manoeuvre practice in real parking bays.

  5. Morden Driving Test Centre

3 miles from Tooting — about 12 minutes down the a24.

Driving Test Centres Near Tooting

You are not limited to the closest centre. Booking one a little further out often means a much earlier test date, and we teach the routes at every centre listed here.

Morden Driving Test Centre

10 Tudor Drive, Morden, Surrey SM4 4PE

3 milesAbout 12 minutes down the A24

Very close, and the usual choice. Being this near means we can practise actual test routes regularly rather than as a one-off before the test.

Mitcham Driving Test Centre

Redhouse Road, Mitcham, Surrey CR0 3AF

3 milesAbout 15 minutes along Mitcham Road

Equally close, with more roundabouts on its routes. Between the two, Tooting learners can almost always find an early date at one or the other.

Tolworth Driving Test Centre

1b Douglas Road, Tolworth, Surrey KT6 7RZ

8 milesAbout 25 minutes

Rarely needed from Tooting given how close the other two are, but useful if both are booked well out.

Distances are from central Tooting. Test availability changes week to week — ask us which centre is booking soonest when you enquire.

What Happens in Your First Lesson in Tooting

Nervous about the first one? Here is exactly how it goes, start to finish.

  1. 1.We collect you

Your instructor picks you up from your door anywhere in SW17, or from a meeting point that suits you — Tooting Broadway Underground station is a common one. The lesson clock starts when you get in the car, not when we set off.

  2. 2.Eyesight check and paperwork

A quick number-plate read at 20 metres, the same check the examiner does on test day, and we take a look at your provisional licence. Two minutes, once, on your first lesson only.

  3. 3.The cockpit drill

We drive to Garratt Lane and the Graveney streets and go through the controls with the engine off — seat, mirrors, pedals, gears and steering. You will not be asked to move the car until you know what everything does.

  4. 4.Your first drive

Moving off, stopping, and steering on a quiet road with dual controls on your side of the car. Most people drive within the first half hour of their first lesson, and nobody is thrown into traffic on day one.

  5. 5.Debrief and plan

We drop you back, go over what went well and what to work on, and agree what the next lesson covers. You will get a clear idea of roughly how many hours you need before a Morden Driving Test Centre test.

Free Pickup Across Tooting

Free door-to-door pickup throughout SW17. We collect from home, work or college, and these are the meeting points learners here suggest most often.

It is busy, and we do not start there. But learning to handle it is genuinely valuable, because nothing on a Morden or Mitcham test route is as demanding as the Broadway at rush hour.
Yes, and in Tooting that is easy to do. Both local centres are close enough that we drive their routes regularly rather than saving them for a single lesson before the test.
Often. A lot of our Tooting learners work there, and we fit lessons around shift patterns including early mornings and evenings.

About Tooting

Tooting lies in the south of the London Borough of Wandsworth, between Balham to the north and Mitcham to the south. It is best known for its markets, its food, and St George’s Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country and a major local employer.

The Northern line runs through Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway, and there is a National Rail station too, but the area is spread out and a lot of local journeys are awkward without a car. St George’s shift patterns are a common reason people here learn to drive, since getting home at three in the morning is not a public transport problem anyone wants.
