Tooting is the closest of all our areas to a test centre, and that changes how lessons here work. Morden is three miles down the A24 and Mitcham is not much further, so learners spend a high proportion of their hours on the actual roads the examiner will use. Very few areas let you practise the real thing this cheaply.
The local driving challenge is Tooting Broadway. It is one of the busiest junctions in South London, with buses, market traffic, pedestrians crossing more or less continuously and side roads feeding in from every direction. Learners who can handle the Broadway at four in the afternoon are rarely troubled by anything on a test route.

Your instructor picks you up from your door anywhere in SW17, or from a meeting point that suits you — Tooting Broadway Underground station is a common one. The lesson clock starts when you get in the car, not when we set off.
A quick number-plate read at 20 metres, the same check the examiner does on test day, and we take a look at your provisional licence. Two minutes, once, on your first lesson only.
We drive to Garratt Lane and the Graveney streets and go through the controls with the engine off — seat, mirrors, pedals, gears and steering. You will not be asked to move the car until you know what everything does.

Tooting lies in the south of the London Borough of Wandsworth, between Balham to the north and Mitcham to the south. It is best known for its markets, its food, and St George’s Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country and a major local employer.
